KOZHIKODE: The heat and dust of college union polls, usual with higher educational institutions in the State, is missing here. Yet, union elections are held regularly and meticulously at the Providence Women’s College, Kozhikode, on strengths of individual merit and capability. This has been the practice for the last 55-odd years, ever since the formation of the college that is affiliated to the Calicut University. And on November 29, the girls elected the office-bearers for 2007-2008, with due fanfare but sans politics. Personality, charisma and leadership played a role as D. Dilna was elected chairperson, Anjana P. Prabhas as general secretary of the union and Merin Maria James as student editor. “Yet, there is healthy competition and the usual hustle and bustle that accompany college elections. The meet-the-candidate programme gave an opportunity to the student electorate to gauge the quality candidates and their overall personality,” says K.S. Shimna a second year student of commerce who has been elected joint-secretary of the college union. “There is healthy canvassing for the candidates too by different student groups that adds to the total camaraderie,” says Merin Maria James, the newly-elected student editor. Last year, the union chairperson was elected unanimously. This year, there were three candidates, on an average, to contest for every post. But the media glare that accompanied college union polls was missing. For obvious reasons, there was no politics here.
