Government urged to consult farmers on modernisation of 17 channels

Staff Reporter

Panel should meet representatives of ayacutdars: Association

TIRUCHI: The Cauvery Delta Farmers’ Welfare Association has urged the State government to ascertain the views of farmers on the proposed modernisation of 17 channels in the downstream of the Mettur Dam between the Mettur and the Grand Anicut.

In a statement issued here on Monday, association executive president V. Rajaram said the maximum utilisation of irrigational waters would be ensured only if the farmers’ views were ascertained and executed.

Welcoming the State government’s proposal for modernising the channels through the World Bank-funded project, Mr. Rajaram said the high-level committee appointed for ascertaining the farmers’ views should meet the representatives of ayacutdars of 17 channels, besides those in the ayacuts of the Amaravathy, the Noyyal and the Bhavani.

Technical opinion

He also suggested that the technical opinions of retired engineers and agricultural experts should be viewed for drafting the modernisation programme in order to achieve the desired irrigational benefits in and around Tiruchi, Karur, Salem and Namakkal districts, besides Thanjavur district.
