SUPPORTING A CAUSE: Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit arrives for the World Disability Day function at India Gate in New Delhi on Monday. NEW DELHI: A large number of differently-abled persons gathered at India Gate in the Capital on Monday to celebrate World Disability Day. Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit was present there as chief guest on the occasion to lend her support to the cause of the disabled and related issues. The theme for this year’s event was “Celebrating United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities — Ek Nayi Umang”. Participants from across the country came together in a show of solidarity. Representatives from several non-government organisations and societies were also present on the scene. The National Association of the Deaf took out a march from India Gate to Jantar Mantar to express their support to the cause of the differently-abled demanding equal access to quality education and better employment opportunities. DisruptionHowever, the event was disrupted by a protester who claimed that the Government had done nothing to implement the Act that sought equal opportunities, protection of rights and full participation for the disabled.
