Need for AWARENESS: Principal District and Sessions Judge S. Thangakani handing over a copy of “The Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act, 1995” to physically challenged women at a function in Tiruchi on Monday. First Additional District and Sessions Judge V. Ramamurthy (extreme left) is also seen. TIRUCHI: Physically challenged persons should not be discouraged or neglected since they are equally capable of achieving things, speakers said at a function to mark to International Day of Disabled Persons organised here on Monday. There have been several instances of physically challenged persons proving that they are second to none in registering achievements, they said at the function organised jointly by the District Legal Services Authority, District Rehabilitation Centre and WIND Trust. Condition of women Presiding over the function, Principal District and Sessions Judge S. Thangakani said: “The Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act, 1995 has provided opportunities for the physically challenged in education and employment. The plight of disability-affected women was more pitiable, he observed, emphasising that physically challenged persons should not be neglected.” First Additional District and Sessions Judge V. Ramamurthy said the physically challenged persons should know about their rights and benefits given to them by the government through the 1995 Act. He said awareness should be created through sensitising government officials to the Act. P. Jayapalan, Additional District Judge, Fast Track Court-II said the physically challenged were capable of excelling by virtue of their mental strength and determination. T. Pon Prakash, Principal Subordinate Judge and secretary, District Legal Services Authority, said it was essential to understand their requirements. Tiruchi Bar Association president M. Jesu Paulraj, advocates T. Jayanthi Rani, K. Manoharan and K.A.V. Dhinakaran spoke on the occasion.
