Mature democracy: Chavez

GRACEFUL ACCEPTANCE: Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez holds copies of the Constitution (right) and his proposed changes at a news conference in Caracas on Monday.

Caracas: President Hugo Chavez said on Monday he may have been too ambitious in asking voters to let him stand indefinitely for re-election and endorse a huge leap to a socialist state.

“I understand and accept that the proposal I made was quiet profound and intense,” he said after the result.

He said the outcome had taught him that “Venezuelan democracy is maturing.” — AP
