New facility: N. Sundara Devan, Chairman, Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, Chennai, (left), after unveiling a plaque at the inauguration of a Primary Treatment Section near Vaniyambadi. — VANIYAMBADI: The tannery units in Vaniyambadi and Ambur must stick to certain standards prescribed by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) before discharging effluents into the waterbodies, N. Sundara Devan, Chairman, Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, Chennai, said here on Tuesday. Participating in a function to inaugurate a Primary Treatment Section in the Common Effluent Treatment Plant built at the cost of Rs.4.45 crore with assistance from the Department of Industrial Planning and Policy , at Valayampet near Vaniyambadi, he said the tannery units should expedite the process of achieving zero discharge through Reverse Osmosis process. The Central government had introduced the Water Act in 1974. The State government became party to it in 1982. The Pollution Control Board was constituted to maintain and protect the water bodies from the effluents discharged from the tannery units. Mr. Sundara Devan said that the Water Act had clearly prescribed various parameters for discharging the effluents into the water bodies. One of the parameters was that the units should get the consent of the Pollution Control Board before discharging the effluents .
