KASARAGOD: The State government is waiting for the report of the four-member expert committee on power sector reforms to take steps to retain the Kerala State Electricity Board as a public sector firm even after December 9, when the extended time allotted by the Union government for restructuring of State electricity boards ends, Power Minister A.K. Balan has said. At a press conference here on Monday, Mr. Balan conceded that the KSEB would face a crisis after the final date fixed by the Union government for restructuring based on Electricity Act 2003 ended. The Minister said the State government had sought the help of Union Ministers from the State to save the KSEB from the consequences of restructuring, but it had not succeeded. Some of them had expressed their helplessness in the matter, Mr. Balan said. The Minister pointed out that the Union government and the Electricity Act passed by it were solely responsible for the impending crisis and the state government was left with only few options in the issue. Explaining the development works being planned by the State government in the power sector, Mr. Balan said the impediments to the commissioning of a power highway through the State connecting Koodankulam in Tamil Nadu with Mysore could be cleared in the near future.
