dated December 5, 1957: Need for joint efforts

Mr. T. T. Krishnamachari, Union Finance Minister, addressed the Commonwealth Parliamentary conference in New Delhi on December 3 in a closed session and a copy of his address was made available later. He said that the task of reconciling the needs of the non-complementary economies of the Commonwealth countries had to be tackled soon and effectively. “The economic problems of the Commonwealth countries would require detailed and careful examination by a group of experts. Such an endeavour has to be a joint Commonwealth endeavour instead of the endeavour of the individual countries of the Commonwealth. To the extent more thought is given to these difficult aspects of the Commonwealth countries, we forge new links — more enduring than what now holds the Commonwealth together.”
