dated December 5, 1957: Labour unrest

Ceylon is passing through an unprecedented and grave crisis, economically, socially and commercially as a result of a series of strikes affecting the nerve centre of the island’s commerce, administration and health. Work in the port has come to a standstill. Shops in the busy Fort and Pettah present a desolate appearance. The Transport Minister was authorised on December 1 at a Cabinet meeting to hire outside labour to unload food cargoes. Commercial sources have issued a severe warning that a major economic crisis is in the offing on account of the labour unrest.
