MUMBAI: The Rs. 200-crore power transformer factory of Siemens at Kalwa near here was inaugurated on Tuesday by Union Power Minister Sushilkumar Shinde in the presence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh. The factory, spread over an area of 40,000 sq. metres, will cater to domestic and export markets. The manufacturing facility will provide direct employment to about 500 people and indirect employment to about 1,000 people in full production. The unit will be able to address the heightened demand for power transmission equipment in the country by designing and manufacturing large transformers of power rating up to 600 MVA and 800 kV voltage class — which is the maximum voltage established now in India. The factory will also make special application transformers such as HVDC and traction furnace applications. The factory will strengthen the transmission network through its 1,200 kV class transformers, in view of the 1,200 kV lines that are envisaged in the near future. To start with, the new facility has a capacity to make transformers totalling 15,000 MVA annually. Expressing happiness over the commissioning of the new plant, J. Schubert, Managing Director, Siemens, said, “this has enhanced our portfolio in the power segment and we can now offer the full spectrum of products covering the transmission and distribution segment. The new factory is on a par with other transformer factories of Siemens worldwide and with this, we have moved one step ahead in achieving our objective of strengthening local production for domestic as well as the global markets.”
The Kalwa factory is the latest edition to the prestigious league of 17 transformer factories of Siemens worldwide.
