Tintu Luka. Kottayam: The creation of seven meet records, including the completion of a record double by the prodigious Tintu Luka (Kozhikode), marked the highpoint of the second day’s proceedings of the athletics events in the 51st Kerala School Games at the Nehru Stadium here on Tuesday. Having rewritten her own last year’s meet record in the 400 metres on the opening day, Tintu, who is being personally trained by the legendary P.T. Usha, once again displayed the potential in her as she ran a solo race in the seniors girls’ 800m and powered herself to her second meet record. Tintu, having left the rest of the field behind well within the first 150m, was thereby forced to work out her own pace through the rest of the remaining distance. Undeterred with such a proposition, she carried on doggedly and finished the two-lapper, but the lack of competition did show in her timing, which was far below her personal best of 2:09.00 seconds. Still, the 2:12.57s that Tintu returned was good enough to beat the existing meet record of 2:14.01s set by Anu Mariam Jose (Kannur) in 2005. Meanwhile, Vikas Chandran (Ernakulam) hurdled his way to glory in the senior boys’ 400m hurdles. The St. George HSS, Kothamangalam, student did face stiff resistance in the initial stages from eventual second-placed M.R. Pradeep (Kalladi HSS, Kumarampthur, Palakkad) and this in turn was a blessing in disguise for the 17-year-old Vikas as he stepped up pace midway through the race. The Ernakulam boy was timed at 54.28s, which clearly bettered the 2004 meet mark of 54.40s established by V.B. Bineesh (Ernakulam). Ervin T. Joy brought further cheer to the St. George HSS and Ernakulam camps as he touched a new high in the senior boys’ discus by clearing a distance of 38.11m. The old record for the event, 37.17 by Prasob S. Narayan (Ernakulam), was set in 2004. For someone who could finish only with a bronze in the shot put competition on Monday, Ervin saw to it that the gold did not slip through his fingers this time as he beat back the challenge from the rest of the field with his record-breaking effort on his fourth attempt. Saranya’s new markFinally, after a frustrating opening day, the sports divisions too did take a place in the record sheet through J. Saranya (Centralised Sports Hostel, Kollam), who created a new record in the senior girls’ shot put with a throw of 12.21m. Though it was good enough to erase S.G. Greeshma’s meet mark of 11.08m, it was still much below Saranya’s career best of 12.87m achieved while winning the gold in the National junior championship in Vijayawada last month. The remaining three records all came in the walking competition and here it was the athletes of HS Parli, Palakkad, who impressed by accounting for all the three marks. They were M. Shihabudden (senior boys’ 5km), V.S. Sandhya (senior girls’ 5km) and K.M. Meeshma (junior girls’ 3km). It was a great achievement in itself considering the fact that this rural school has practically little facility to match its excellent record over the last few years. Ernakulam, with St. George HSS and Mar Basil HSS continuing to power it through, was expectedly in the lead with 255 points and now looks certain to lift the overall championship trophy yet again. Palakkad was second with 129 and Kottayam third with 65. The results: General Schools: Boys: Seniors: 200m: 1. M.M. Sreeraj (Ekm) 22.39s, 2. N.N. Manukumar (Ekm) 22.53s, 3. N.
