For women’s welfare

Staff Correspondent

The Mahila Sanchari Jagruti Dal has helped women in Bellary lead better lives

A great help: Women and children at an awareness campaign undertaken by the Mahila Sanchari Jagruti Dal, set up by the Bellary district police at Vittalapur village in Sandur taluk on Tuesday.

BELLARY: Better times seemed in the offing for Rajeshwari, who after being deserted by her husband after having borne a child, was helped by the Mahila Sanchari Jagruti Dal streamline life. Rajeshwari had married Ramesh, an employee in the municipal council in Kamalapur. After fissures began to erupt over familial interference, she approached the women’s grievance cell under the office of the Superintendent of Police, Bellary, for help.

The staff at the helpline summoned Ramesh and ascertained details. On probing a little further, they found out that Ramesh had been suffering from a major illness and that the name of Rajeshwari had not been entered in his service records.

They asked him to act accordingly so as to ensure that his wife legally inherited the benefits due to him. The initiative is a part of the Karnataka State Police-United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund Gender Sensitisation and Peoples’-friendly Police Project.

Superintendent of Police Amrit Paul had conceived of the idea of setting up the Dal, comprising women members representing various departments, who would be visiting all 560 villages in the district. Problems faced by women and children would be redressed and awareness created among them on their rights, he said. The Dal functions on Mondays and Thursdays.
