VISAKHAPATNAM: The Visakhapatnam Customs House has detected customs evasion in 39 cases involving an amount of Rs.22.11 crores during the current fiscal. During the previous year, evasion to the tune of Rs.3.46 crores was confirmed in 51 cases. This time as of now, 39 cases were booked and a major evasion of Rs.17.5 crores was found in a ship with a consignment of batteries and hydraulic parts. Later, Rs.5.9 crores was collected from the offenders. Chief Commissioner of Customs P.N. Vittal Das told reporters here on Tuesday that the Customs House was also doing well in earning good revenue. During 2006-07, the Customs House collected a revenue of Rs.1,863 crores and this year as of November 30, Rs.1,693 crores was earned as against Rs.1,187 crores during the corresponding period last year. He said they registered a growth rate of 42.6 per cent. The target set for current fiscal is Rs.2,310 crores and the department was confident of achieving it with a growth rate of 24 per cent. With work under way for commissioning the Gangavaram Port next year and several projects in the pipeline, the revenue from the Customs House was poised to register a quantum leap, he remarked.
