Crackdown on weighbridges showing wrong measurements
Staff Reporter
HYDERABAD: Legal Metrology officials who conducted raids on weighbridges in Nalgonda districts have found a new modus operadi during which farmers are allegedly cheated by underweighing the paddy being transported. Officials have found that there is a variation of 5 to 10 kg. per bag of paddy being transported.
Authorities conducted raids on weighbridges in Miryalaguda of Nalgonda on Sunday and in Kodad town on Monday too. They found that six weighbridges are causing loss to the farming community by showing measurements less than the original weight of the paddy bags. Cases were registered against them under relevant sections of the Standards of Weights and Measurements Enforcement Act, 1985.
Controller of Legal Metrology Tejdeep Kaur Menon said the crackdown across the State on weighbridges showing wrong measurements would continue since it is the paddy procurement season.
Severe loss
“Slightest wrong measurement would mean severe loss to the farmers, who are already complaining of several issues. On Sunday, eight cases were registered in Miryalaguda for such irregularities,” Ms. Menon said. Till October this year, 566 cases for various irregularities relating to measurements were registered against the rice millers.
