SBH, seven other banks strike work

Protest against merger proposal with SBI

HYDERABAD: Officers of the State Bank of Hyderabad and seven associate banks of State Bank of India across the State struck work on Tuesday to protest their proposed merger with the SBI.

The clerical cadres of these banks had gone on a day’s strike on Monday.

Officers of the eight associate banks of the SBI held massive demonstrations here and in Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Guntur and at their zonal and regional offices.

‘Total success’

Harsha Vardhan Madabhushi, general secretary, Associate Banks Officers’ Association (ABOA), which organised the strike, described it as ‘total success’.

He said the banks’ staff staged a demonstration at SBH, Gunfoundry, waving banners and placards and raised slogans opposing the merger. K. Ramakoteswara Rao, secretary, State unit of All-India Bank Officers’ Confederation, Krishna Kumar, general secretary, SBI Local Head Office Officers’ Association, K. Narahari, general secretary, SBH Employees’ Union , P. Subba Rao, president, SBH unit of ABOA, addressed the demonstrators.

They explained why the association was opposing the merger, terming it ‘selfish’on the part of SBI.

The leaders expressed apprehension that the merger would affect the implementation of government-sponsored schemes, defeating their social objectives.
