Insurance for farm labourers

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The State government has announced an insurance policy covering all the landless agricultural labourers.

In tune with ‘Aam Admi Bhima Yojana’ announced by the Centre, the government will extend insurance coverage to 38 lakh agricultural labourers across the State. As part of the scheme that involves a premium of Rs. 200 per person, the government will contribute Rs. 100 while the Centre would give a matching grant.

Under the scheme, Rs. 30,000 will be paid as compensation in the case of natural death of the beneficiary and Rs. 75,000 in the case of accidental death. The coverage for permanent disability will be Rs. 75,000 and those who become partially handicapped will be paid Rs. 37,500.

Announcing the scheme at a press conference here on Tuesday, Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy said the State would incur an expenditure on Rs. 38 crore on the scheme while the Centre would contribute an equal amount.

Officials had been directed to identify and enrol all the landless agricultural labourers so that the scheme is fully operational by April 1.
