Security stepped up in city

Checkposts strengthened with armed police pickets

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore City Police have stepped up security across the city in view of the 15th anniversary of the Babri Masjid demolition that falls on Thursday (December 6). The measure was only a matter of precaution, the police clarified.

A detailed bandobust scheme has been put in place under the supervision of the Commissioner of Police, C.K. Gandhirajan. The city police said 24 mobile patrol vehicles had been pressed into service in addition to 30 motor cycle patrols and 20 cycle patrols.

As many as 12 checkposts on arterial and feeder roads had been strengthened with armed police pickets.

Armed police pickets had been posted in 14 sensitive pockets in addition to round-the-clock armed guards for 22 vital installations.

Security had been stepped up in all the nine police housing quarters in the city. Twenty four places of worship and six political party offices had been brought under round-the-clock armed police security, the police said.

The security arrangements are entrusted with the Deputy Commissioners of Police, P. Sugumar (Law and Order), P. Nagarajan (Crime) and S. Manoharan (Traffic). Security has been stepped up at five railway stations, four bus stands and Peelamedu airport.

As a matter of precaution booking of parcels in trains has been suspended till December 7.

The police have requested the travelling public to reach the railway station at least an hour in advance to go through the scanning of luggage and frisking of passengers.

Anti-sabotage teams

Five anti-sabotage teams of the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squads (BDDS) of the Coimbatore City Police and sniffer dogs have been kept ready.

Fire and Rescue Service vehicles and riot combat vehicles have been positioned at Ukkadam, Kattoor, Variety Hall Road, Podanur police stations and control room.

Revenue administration has deployed executive magistrates one each for every police.

Manpower

In addition to the manpower of 2,000 available with the city police, the Commissioner has drawn additional reinforcements from Armed Reserve, Tamil Nadu Special Police and from the Paramilitary forces such as Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Rapid Action Force (RAF).

The Railway police have been put on high alert and to prevent sabotage attempts. In Coimbatore Rural District and neighbouring districts, the Inspector-General of Police, West Zone, K. Rajendran, Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Seema Agrawal and the Superintendent of Police, Coimbatore Rural District, G. Karthikeyan, reviewed the security arrangements.
