VERIFICATION: Voters of Tambaram and Alandur constituencies checking the integrated draft photo electoral rolls on Monday.

TAMBARAM: The integrated draft photo electoral rolls of the Tambaram and Alandur Assembly constituencies were released on Monday. Chengalpattu Sub-Collector P. Seetharaman released the rolls in the presence of Tambaram tahsildar S.Indra at the Taluk Office here.

Officials said the release of the rolls was the culmination of a process that began soon after the Assembly elections last year. Both the Election Commission and the State Election Commission were particular that voters possessing valid identity cards or documents alone should exercise their franchise in the elections. This is aimed at increasing the voter turnout and also preventing bogus voting.

Among the nine Assembly constituencies in Kancheepuram district, Tambaram and Alandur have the highest percentage of voters without identity cards. The task of identifying voters without electors photo identity card got under way and three checklists were prepared after several rounds of door-to-door verification.

Based on this, the draft rolls were published in June and the supplementary rolls in September. And now, the integrated draft photo electoral rolls with names and images of all voters in the constituencies have been released. Copies have been circulated to registered political parties, all designated polling locations, offices of the six municipalities, and post offices. The entire roll is available at the Tambaram Taluk Office. There are about 3.58 lakh names in the rolls for Alandur and about 6.25 lakh in Tambaram. There is a significant decrease in Tambaram, considering there were about 8.75 lakh voters on the list during last year’s Assembly polls.

Officials would be conducting special camps on December 8, 9, and 16 for making corrections, additions and deletions. The last date for applying for the exercise would be December 18. Those who attain the age of 18 by January 1, 2008, can also apply for inclusion.

A large number of voters turned on Monday morning and began checking the rolls. They appealed to officials to ensure that the relevant application forms were available wherever the rolls were displayed.
