DCE to join a Japanese company for new bio-diesel research project

To see long-term suitability of jatropha bio-diesel in engine

The fuel seen as new hope to reduce the petroleum bill

NEW DELHI: The Delhi College of Engineering (DCE) is collaborating with Japan’s Yanmar Company Limited -- billed as the world’s leading diesel engine manufacturing company -- to work on a two-year bio-diesel research project.

The project was inaugurated by Minister and Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of Japan, Ryoichi Horie, here on Tuesday.

The broad objective of the research project will be to evaluate the long-term suitability of jatropha bio-diesel in a diesel engine to address the issues of material commutability, fuel oxidation and effect on the fuel injection system.

“Under this project, a Yanmar diesel engine will be run on neat bio-diesel produced at the college for 10,000 hours without a break. This will be one of the most exhaustive studies carried out all over the world on bio-diesel,” claimed the principal investigator of the project, Naveen Kumar.

“The demand for diesel in India is around four to five times higher than petrol unlike in developed countries where the consumption of diesel and petrol is almost similar. In this context, bio-diesel in the past four years has become a very promising renewable fuel in India which is seen as a new hope to reduce the burden of petroleum import bill and also protect the environment,” Dr. Kumar added.

Earlier, Mr. Horie underscored the significance of new sources of energy that can help in rural empowerment and also address socially relevant issues like employment generation and environmental degradation. “The renewable energy industry is a sunrise industry and it will prove to be a viable service industry,” he said.
