Getting ready: Preparations for the expo in progress at Oupplam sports ground in Puducherry. — PUDUCHERRY: About 200 school students from 26 States will showcase their talent at the 34th Jawaharlal Nehru National Science exhibition to be held at Oupplam Indira Gandhi Sports Complex here from December 21 to 27. Preparations are on for the smooth conduct of the exhibition, which will be inaugurated by President Pratibha Patil on December 21 evening, Education Minister M.O.H. F. Shahjahan said here on Wednesday. Students who came first in the State-level science expo held in different parts of the country would take part in the seven-day programme. They would exhibit their creations at the 55 stalls specially made at the sports complex, he said. Various scientific models highlighting recent developments in food and agriculture, industry and environment, energy, educational technology and mathematical modelling, transport and communication developed by the students would be exhibited, he said. The event would also feature quiz competition and lectures on various subjects. There would be also cultural programmes in the evening throughout the event, the Minister said. A souvenir to commemorate the exhibition, which would contain some of the articles of former President A.P.J Abdul Kalam, would be released during the event, he said. Committees have been formed for the conduct of the exhibition he said, adding that 300 teachers were involved to carry out various functions. The event would be organised by the Education Department and the National Council for Education Research and Training. The Minster said the government would shortly sign an agreement with Azim Premji Foundation to develop a proper teaching method that could be adopted at the Smart Schools. Around 80 government schools have been identified by the Education Department to introduce the Smart School system, he said. The Foundation would also be entrusted with the task of training teachers in Smart School concept, he added.
