Hubli-Dharwad
Many shops had come up illegally at road corners There was not much resistance from the shop owners HUBLI: After a brief lull, the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) has resumed clearing encroachments of public property and pavements in the twin cities. On Wednesday, the HDMC staff, led by officials, conducted the clearance drive in Adarshnagar and surrounding areas. Many of the petty shops that had come up at road corners allegedly encroaching upon pavements and roads were removed by the HDMC staff. As some of the HDMC staff removed the petty shops and other structures built on corporation property, the others transported the debris to the dumping yard. There was not much resistance from the owners of the petty shops as they were reportedly informed about the drive in advance. ClearedMeanwhile, the HDMC cleared the Durgadbail circle area, which used to be the most congested market place in the city. Following the action of the HDMC, vendors and owners of pushcarts who were operating at the centre of the Durgadbail next to the high mast lamp have moved out. With no vendors and petty shops, vehicular movement has now become smooth in the market place now. AgitationVendors and petty shop owners had staged an agitation on Monday in protest against the drive. Yuva Samata Sena office-bearers, who had led the protest, had urged the Government to earmark hawking zones so that vendors could carry out their business without being “harassed” by the authorities.
