PUDUCHERRY: A large number of activists belonging to the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) and the Bharatiya Khet Mazdoor Union (BKMU) on Wednesday courted arrest by staging a road roko at 16 places in Puducherry and Karaikal demanding among other things steps to curb price rise and revival of public distribution system.

President of the Puducherry unit of the AITUC R.Viswanathan, general secretary of the union V.S.Abishekam and secretary of the Communist Party of India N.Kalainathan were among the activists who led the agitation.

An AITUC unit spokesperson said here that the road roko was held as part of a nationwide struggle to highlight demands such as implementation of comprehensive legislation for the workers belonging to the unorganised sector and farm labourers, besides stopping violation of labour laws. The agitation was also aimed at opposing pro-employer labour reforms. The activists, who participated in the protest, flayed steps such as outsourcing, downsizing and adopting contract system.

Urging the Centre and the Union Territory government to remove the ban on recruitment, they called for measures to generate employment.
