“Task force on medical study not for extension of MBBS course duration”

Without full registration or necessary qualification students cannot be involved

Students ready to serve as qualified medical professionals, but not as learners

MADURAI: The task force on medical education for National Rural Health Mission (NHRM) had declared the extension of duration of MBBS course for compulsory rural service as unnecessary, claimed Tamil Nadu Government Doctors Association secretary, K. Senthil, here on Tuesday.

Briefing presspersons, he clarified Union Health Minister’s statement that the extension move was based on the suggestions of the task force for NHRM and said that the students were serving the rural public even while pursuing the community medicine course during their internship period.

The task force had suggested certain measures to promote rural service such as cash incentives, protected housing quarters, free Internet facility, 50 per cent reservation in entrance examinations for post graduate studies in Government and private medical colleges and an increase in the upper age limit for retirement up to 62 years, he said.

Expressing concern over the false notion that doctors did not prefer rural service, Indian Medical Association (Madurai Branch) secretary R. Ravindran said the medical professionals were not averse to rural service but were only concerned about students being involved in practice. Without full registration or necessary qualification students could not be involved.
