Science education

This refers to the article, ‘Is our technological manpower keeping pace’ (Dec. 4). The author has raised a very valid issue — the quality of instruction in our S&T institutions. In the developed countries, from the stage of middle school itself, the emphasis and content, particularly in science subjects, is largely on “enquiry from within” as opposed to “instruction from without” prevalent in our system. This takes the form of a “project” the student has to work on and in the process evolve a premise and verify the same by given/observed facts. This lays in him a foundation for quest and a leaning towards scientific enquiry as also a readiness to react to drawbacks in the standard of instruction he is to receive as he moves up.

R. Narayanan,

Ghaziabad
