News Analysis
* * The last paragraph in a report “‘No change in DMK stand’” (December 5, 2007) was: “During her [Kanimozhi’s] maiden speech, Union Ministers T.T. Baalu and A. Raja were present in the House.” It should have been T.R. Baalu. * * The caption of the accompanying photograph in a report “Vizag’s De Paul wins the Young World Quiz 2007” (December 4, 2007) was “Tough Win: Nishant Pani (left) and B. Bharath of De Paul School, Visakhapatnam, winners of the All-India final of the Amity University The Hindu Young World Quiz with the chief guest, actor Prashanth in Chennai on Monday”, while the text gave the names of the boys as Nishant Pani and Bharat Pani. It was an error. The names in the photo caption are right. * * In a review of the book “Shades of Difference — Mac Maharaj and the Struggle for South Africa”, titled “Battle against apartheid” (“Book Review” page, December 4, 2007), a sentence in the second paragraph was: “… The documentation is supported by 71 pages of endnotes, apart from a variety of published and unpublished sources, including a vast number of interviews conducted over two decades (1885-2005).” It should have been “1985-2005”. In the fourth paragraph, a sentence was “When Mac finally ‘came home’ after receiving indemnity in June 1990 (though he had been inside South Africa under deep cover since August 1998 directing Operation Vula) he should have been able to take part in the transition process openly with his other colleagues in the ANC and the SACP.” It should have been “1988”. * * In a review of the book “Studies on Fortification in India”, headlined “South Indian defence architecture” (“Book Review” page, December 4, 2007), a sentence in the seventh paragraph was: “The interest that the Mysore wars arose in England has left behind detailed descriptions and faithful drawings of these; despite the lack of literary and epigraphical material, this helps the historian in studying them.” The sentence should have been “The interest that the Mysore wars aroused in England ….” It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible.
