Chavez gesture

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: Venezuelan President, Hugo Chavez, has donated Rs. 11.91 lakh for the construction of a new building for a primary school in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district. The building is to be named after the legendary revolutionary, Simon Bolivar. A cheque was handed over to the Chief Minister by Venezuela’s Ambassador to India, Milena Santana-Ramirez, here on Wednesday.

Mr. Chavez had visited the Bagu primary school in 2005 and was highly impressed with various facilities provided by the authorities there including the mid-day meal programme. He also reportedly appreciated the panchayat system, Aparna Gupta, the district’s zilla sabadhipati, told The Hindu.
