Training programme inaugurated Village-level panels mooted VIZIANAGARAM: A mere 24 panchayats out of 931 in the district have earned eligibility for ‘Nirmal Gram Puraskar’, according to Collector B. Kishore. Inaugurating a training programme for mandal resource persons, MPDOs, district samakhyas, voluntary bodies, DEEs/AEEs on Total Sanitation Campaign and Swajaladhara’ at the Collectorate here on Wednesday, the Collector expressed concern over the poor performance of panchayats on sanitation front. He advised that the sarpanches constitute village-level committees by involving women groups, officials and voluntary organisations and create awareness among people on the ill-effects of open defecation and contamination of water sources. He said the RWS would be supply kits for testing pollutants in water for all the panchyats. Already, five literate persons from each mandal were imparted training in water testing. Dr. Kishore said that protecting air and water from pollution alone would help contain epidemics and added that the 24 panchayats that showed results were recommended for ‘Nirmal Gram Puraskar’ awards. Superintending Engineer (RWS) B. Raju, State observer for total sanitation campaign N. Rambabu and officials were present.
