Shortage of cans hits ‘aravana’ sales in Sabarimala

PATHANAMTHITTA: Shortage of eco-friendly cans has badly hit the distribution of ‘aravana’, the most sought-after prasadom at the Lord Ayyappa Temple, in Sabarimala on Wednesday.

The sale was disrupted for about an hour in the morning, forcing the devotees to wait in long queues before the prasadom counters.

However, the Travancore Devaswom Board resumed the sale of ‘aravana’ an hour later, strictly restricting it to two cans per person.

According to Devaswom sources, the total stock of ‘aravana’ containers, that include the old plastic cans, was about 14,000 on Wednesday morning against the daily requirement of 80,000 to 1.25 lakh during the annual festival period. The Devaswom authorities were forced to use the limited old stock of plastic containers too on Wednesday. Serpentine queues of devotees were seen before the counters from Tuesday night. Many complained that they had to wait for almost nine hours to obtain ‘aravana.’

Devaswom Executive Officer B. Unnikrishnan said a consignment of eco-friendly cans had already reached Pampa from Chennai on Wednesday.
