BANGALORE: The newly appointed German Consul General for Karnataka and Kerala, Stefan Graf, called on Governor Rameshwar Thakur at Raj Bhavan here on Wednesday.

A release said that the new German presence in Bangalore was an expression of the great economic and political importance of Karnataka and the Bangalore region for Germany and would further foster Indo-German relations in all fields. Until the Consulate General in Bangalore was fully operational, consular and visa services for the southern States would continue to be provided by the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Chennai, it added.

Mr. Graf started his career as a diplomat in the German Federal Foreign Service in 1976. Before he joined the German Consulate General in Chennai in 2004, he had appointments in Algeria, U.S., Libya, Bonn and Berlin. Since April 2006 Mr. Graf headed the Trade Office of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bangalore.

With the appointment of a Consul General in Bangalore, the release said, the Federal Republic of Germany, as the first foreign country, had taken the decisive step to build up a Consulate General in Bangalore. The Consulate General – once operational would provide services for the business community as well as for German citizens in the region.

Besides Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai, Bangalore would be the fourth city in the country to have German Consulate General.

President Pratibha Patil has formally consented to the appointment of Mr. Graf as the first Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bangalore for Karnataka and Kerala.
