No question of change in leadership, says Dharam Singh

Prakash urged to consider joining Congress

‘Krishna may return to active politics’

N. Dharam Singh

GULBARGA: The former Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh on Wednesday said that the question of change in the State Congress leadership did not arise. Moreover, the party was doing well under the leadership of M. Mallikarjun Kharge.

He, however, said that after the elections in Gujarat, the party in charge of Karnataka, Prithivraj Chavan and AICC secretary Ahmed Patel would arrive in Bangalore to revamp the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC).

Speaking to presspersons here, Mr. Singh asked the former Deputy Chief Minister M.P. Prakash to consider joining the Congress.

Mr. Singh said: “it was better for Mr. Prakash to consider joining the Congress which has a history, rather than other parties that do not have a base in the State.”

The former Chief Minister said he had no clear idea about the return of Maharashtra Governor S.M. Krishna to active politics.

The issue of Mr. Krishna making a comeback (to State politics) would be decided by AICC president Sonia Gandhi.

Mr. Singh said Mr. Krishna may return to active politics, and the leaders would abide by the decision of the high command.

Stating that elections were likely in April or May, the former Chief Minister pointed out that party would consider giving preference to youth while distributing tickets.

Mr. Singh said he would contest the elections from the Jewargi Assembly segment in Gulbarga district, but if the party high command decided to choose a youth he would make way for him.

The former Chief Minister promised to take up the matter of regularising the unauthorised structures with Governor Rameshwar Thakur.

On the desecration of Ambedkar statue in Jewargi, Mr. Singh said he had discussed the issue with the Superintendent of Police, and senior police officials had directed to take stern action against the culprits.

Meanwhile, Mr. Kharge told presspersons at Yadgir that the question of whether the party would fight the elections under his leadership would be decided by the high command.
