Police directed not to arrest VSSC officials

Kochi: The Kerala High Court on Wednesday directed the police not to arrest two senior officials of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), Thiruvananthapuram, in connection with a criminal case registered against them in the Merchiston land deal.

Justice R. Basant issued the order while admitting a petition by K. Madhusoodananan Nair and Nirmal Kumar, controller and coordinator respectively of the VSSC, seeking to quash the complaint against them now pending before the Assistant Chief Judicial Magistrate Court, Thiruvananthapuram.

The two are accused three and four in the case registered by the Vanchiyoor police for various offences including criminal conspiracy.

The allegation against them is that they had forged documents to make unlawful gains to Xavy Mano Mathew of the Merchiston estate in a land deal with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

The court admitted the petition and posted the case to December 19.

The land deal ran into trouble after the State government declared that Mr. Mathew had no legal rights over the land as it owns it under the ecologically fragile land Act.

Later the government offered land free to ISRO for its Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology. — PTI
