Assistance sanctioned to mentally challenged persons

Function marks ‘International Day of the Disabled Persons’ in Pudukottai district

PUDUKOTTAI: The district administration has sanctioned a monthly assistance of Rs.500 each to 400 mentally disabled persons in Pudukottai district, Collector D. Uthirakkumaran said on Wednesday.

Distributing the assistance to the beneficiaries at a function to mark the ‘International Day of the Disabled Persons’ here on Wednesday, he said the assistance was being sanctioned following a special permission by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.

The beneficiaries had more than 60 per cent of the disability and the assistance had been sanctioned irrespective of the income of their families.

Programme

The Collector said 2,977 physically-challenged persons had been sanctioned Rs.2.97 crore at the rate of Rs.10,000 each under the livelihood sustenance programme of the Tsunami District Implementation Unit.

The District Disabled Rehabilitation Department had sanctioned assistances to about 4,700 beneficiaries so far during the current financial year.

Subsidy-linked loan

Mr. Uthirakkumaran distributed assistances to the tune of Rs.3.25 lakh to the differently-abled persons on the occasion including a subsidy-linked loan of Rs.1.90 lakh to members of a self-help group.

District Non-conventional Advisory Committee member Periyannan Arasu and District Disabled Rehabilitation Officer M. George Doss were among those who spoke on the occasion.
