EMU services on Tambaram- Beach sector hit
Special Correspondent
TAMBARAM: Electric train services on the Tambaram-Chennai Beach sector were affected on Wednesday evening, as motormen reported late for duty. This was in response to a major alteration in the rest hours for motormen on the main line between Chennai and Villupuram, officials of Southern Railway said.
From 3 p.m. onwards, almost all Electric Multiple Unit services from Tambaram to Beach left 15 minutes behind schedule, railway sources said.
According to the crew operating on this sector, they protested as a token of support to their colleagues operating on the main line.
They said the rest time for motormen was cut down by more than half from Wednesday morning . Southern Railway officials confirmed that a large number of motormen reported late for duty, while some others left on permission on medical grounds.
For instance, the EMU local between Tambaram and Chennai Beach that was scheduled to leave around 3 p.m., left behind schedule by more than 15 minutes as the crew turned up late. It had a cascading effect on the departure of the subsequent services too, officials told reporters. Normality could not be restored even by 9 p.m., they added. Passengers called up newspaper officers to complain about the late arrival and departure of the EMU services.
