FIGHTING INFECTION: Malanganandapuram residents being treated at the Chromepet Government Hospital on Wednesday. —

TAMBARAM: Nearly 40 residents of Malanganandapuram and surrounding localities in Pallavaram Municipality have taken ill in the past three days reportedly owing to the consumption of contaminated drinking water.

Doctors at Chromepet General Hospital said there was a trickle of patients who complained of acute diarrhoeal disorders from Monday. They were treated and sent back home the same day.

On Tuesday, the number rose to 17 and people with similar problems continued coming to the hospital on Wednesday too. So far, the hospital has treated nearly 40 people and 17 of them are in-patients at present. One of them who complained of severe dehydration was referred to the Institute of Communicable Diseases Hospital, Tondiarpet, and was out of danger, doctors said.

For the past two days, a team of doctors from the Saidapet Health Unit District have been camping at Malanganandapuram, providing medicines to people who complained of vomiting and diarrhoea. Residents complained that they began to vomit and feel giddy soon after drinking Palar water supplied to them.

They suspect that drinking water pipelines might have developed leaks, resulting in sewage contaminating the water. Municipal authorities said they had conducted thorough checks of the entire drinking water pipeline network in the area and there were no leaks anywhere.

An overhead water tank at Bharathi Nagar with a capacity to store 6 lakh litres was also cleaned thoroughly only recently.

Municipal chairman E. Karunanidhi said sanitary staff were working overtime in the affected areas, clearing garbage and also spraying disinfectant all over.
