Tamil Nadu, A.P. resolve fishermen’s issues

HYDERABAD: Mechanised fishing vessels from Andhra Pradesh will forthwith stop entering the fishing zone of Tamil Nadu without obtaining prior licence from the authorities concerned there.

The Governments of A.P. and Tamil Nadu States have also decided not to allow any mechanised fishing vessel up to eight kilometres from the shoreline.

Fishing by vessels of one State will not be permitted during the ban period declared by the other.

These are some of the resolutions adopted as part of the inter-State meeting, the first of its kind at the ministerial level, held here on Wednesday, to address long-pending disputes between the fishermen of two States that are often leading to law and order problems. Fisheries Minister Mandali Buddha Prasad held detailed discussions with his Tamil Nadu counterpart K.P.P Sami in the presence of representatives of the fishermen’s associations of the two States.

Briefing reporters later, Mr. Buddha Prasad said the meeting resolved to take up joint survey under the aegis of Survey of India to demarcate the boundary line across Pulicat lake.

Mr. Sami said the Tamil Nadu delegation came with an “open mind” to the meeting. It was decided to constitute committee comprising the revenue divisional officer, deputy superintendent of police and assistant/deputy directors of fisheries department of Gudur division of Nellore and concerned division in Tiruvallur in Tamil Nadu to sort out issues pertaining to Pulicat lake.

The committees would meet once every quarter and resolve the disputes, if any.
