NEW DELHI: After announcing her resignation from the Lok Sabha over the Nandigram violence, Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee put in an appearance in the House momentarily on Wednesday and forced a quick adjournment of proceedings. Within minutes of entering the House, Ms. Banerjee sought to raise the Nandigram issue amid protests from members of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). At first, Speaker Somnath Chatterjee told Ms. Banerjee that she could raise the issue provided proper notice had been given but as both she and the CPI(M) members entered into a verbal duel, he adjourned the House for half-an-hour. The adjournment came close on the heels of the House deciding to do away with the lunch break to wrap up the business slated for the day. The proposal to work through the lunch hour was made by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Priyaranjan Dasmunsi, who said there was much business scheduled and little time left.
