BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Wednesday stayed all further proceedings by a Bangalore court against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK president M. Karunanidhi. The State of Karnataka and Mr. Karunanidhi had petitioned the High Court on Wednesday against the December 3 order of the Sixth Additional City Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) in asking the city police to investigate a private complaint against the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister. The ACMM passed the order after three city advocates filed a private complaint under Section 200 of the Civil Procedure Code (CPC) before him, stating that they had been hurt by the remarks made by Mr. Karunanidhi against Lord Rama. One of the complainants had stated that though Mr. Karunanidhi had accepted the legal notice, he had so far not responded to it. The ACMM had directed the Assistant Commissioner of Madivala sub-division, Bangalore, to investigate the complaint and report back to the court. The State of Karnataka and Mr. Karunanidhi moved the petition in the court itself and sought a stay of the lower court order. Advocate-General B.V. Acharya, who appeared for the State and also Mr. Karunanidhi contended that the newspaper reports in Bangalore could not be the basis for the ACMM to take cognizance. Justice S. Abdul Nazir, in his interim order, stayed all further proceedings before the ACMM.
