Worried: Family members of constable M.Venkata Ramana seen weeping in Visakhapatnam on Thursday.

VISAKHAPATNAM: Within a day after losing three of its cadres in an encounter near Annavaram in the Visakha agency area, the CPI (Maoist) attacked the police near Vaadamamidi in G.K. Veedhi mandal on Thursday morning, leaving one constable seriously injured.

Navy helicopter

The constable M. Venkata Ramana was airlifted to Visakhapatnam by a Navy helicopter and admitted in a corporate hospital. He is stated to be out of danger.

The district police which dealt a blow to the CPI (Maoist) through the encounter on Thursday followed it with another major success by arresting Kamalamma, wife of CPI (M) east division secretary Jagan at Chintapalli on Thursday. She is divisional committee member of Jana Natya Mandali, the party’s cultural wing and commander of Korukonda dalam.

Superintendent of Police Akun Sabharwal said a special police party was bringing the three naxalites killed in the encounter to Narsipatnam on horse back when the Maoists set off a landmine and immediately started firing at the constables.

Exchange of fire

Police returned fire quickly and the exchange lasted for some time. Later, the naxalites escaped into the surrounding forest. The bodies of naxals killed in Wednesday’s encounter would be brought to Chintapalli.
