Stress on role of applied bioengineering

Bioengineering set to play vital role in progress of country”

CHENNAI: Speakers at a three-day international conference on applied bioengineering that opened at Sathyabama University here on Wednesday underscored the significance of the benefits that would accrue from research in the field.

Indian Bank chairman and managing director M.S. Sundara Rajan said applied bioengineering was set to play a vital role in the progress of the country, particularly in a “super economic nation.”

Students from 35 engineering colleges and universities, including some from a few institutions abroad, are participating in the seminar.

The seminar is being organised by Sathyabama University with the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT).

Highlighting the benefits of bioengineering, particularly with regard to safeguarding the environment, Chancellor of Sathyabama University Jeppiar pointed to the need for taking the benefits of the research to everyone in the society.

NIOT director S. Kathiroli said that applied bioengineering was an attempt to learn from the biological system and apply it for the well being of humanity and society.

Head (Life Science Solutions and Consulting) of Cognizant S. Balasubramanian detailed how science had transformed itself from being a descriptive field to an information management field. On the occasion, a journal on bioengineering and another on the conference proceedings were released.
