CHENNAI: The release of two books that put together assorted music reviews, commentaries and articles written by ‘Kalki’ R. Krishnamurthy marked the remembrance of the trailblazing writer-novelist on Wednesday.

Playwright ‘Crazy’ Mohan released the publications, “Paalatril Oru Pagarkanavu” and “Kalki Valartha Kalaigal,” that include a collection of Kalki’s erudite music and drama criticism.

The event was organised by the Kalki Krishnamurthy Memorial Trust.

The author used the pen name ‘Karnatakam” for these reviews that appeared under the title ‘Aadal Paadal’ in Ananda Vikatan and Kalki through the 1930s.

These writings are said to set the stage for the renaissance of several traditional art forms of South India.

Mr. Mohan said that though the anthologies were a throwback to the 1930s, the essence of Kalki’s writings carried contemporary relevance.

Mr. Mohan said he approached Kalki’s writings, which he read almost every day, as a spiritual man would the scriptures.

For someone whose extraordinary writings spanned arts, journalism, literature and life, Kalki had the rare gift of breaking down complex concepts into a simple language that was accessible to the lay, he said.

Knowledge of music

Carnatic vocalist Gayathri Venkataraghavan said the reviews brought in the anthologies showed Kalki’s depth of knowledge of music.

He was a writer who made people laugh and think.
