Keeping pesticides at bay is a task for the farmers. The attack of several species of insects and flies can do a lot of harm to the agricultural products. Quite often, the farmers are forced to use chemicals and pesticides to ward off the threat from the infestation. But farming practices followed in a systematic way after taking due precautions has yielded good results. Produces from farms that are free of chemicals and pesticides are in good demand from within the country and abroad. In fact, there is steady increase in exports of organic products. This has enthused farmers and several among them are turning to organic farming practices. There are not enough agencies to guide such farmers. It is in this backdrop that a few organisations have come forward to generate awareness among farmers on the do’s and don’ts of organic farming. Peekay Tree Crops Development Foundation, a Kochi-based organisation, has decided to organise a series workshops for the benefit of farmers who are interested in taking up organic farming. The first workshop in this series will be held at Pattanakkad on December 18. The programme is being supported by UNDP, Coconut Development Board, Department of Agriculture and a few other agencies. The workshops are being organised in the initial phase of the project for sustained organic farming. R. Ramabhadran Pillai
