Fever claims four lives in Dharapuram

Staff Reporter

Absence of public hygiene is said

to be the reason

ERODE: Viral fever has so far claimed four lives in and around Dharapuram town. The latest victim is a six-year-old Sreejith, who died a couple of days ago in a private hospital in Coimbatore.

He was a resident Dharapuram town and resided in the same ward as the Municipal Chairman Subramaniam.

Similar incident

Sources say a month ago two persons belonging to Konapuram succumbed to the viral fever.

One of two victims was 16-year-old Thangamani, a Class IX student. There was a similar incident in Upputhuraipalayam village. Absence of public hygiene is said to be reason.

“Disposal of municipal waste does not take place on a daily basis. And if it happens, the work is shoddy,” complains P. Ragupathy of the Communist Party of India.

He says the conservancy workers do not clear the garbage, leading to accumulation at almost all the places in the town. In neighbouring civic bodies, the condition is worse. They neither have the will nor the manpower to ensure clean surroundings, he adds.

Sources in the Health Department say at present the cause of death appears to be viral fever and to ascertain the real reason samples have been sent to the State Government’s lab in Hosur.

Conservancy work

Municipal Chairman Subramaniam denies the allegation about poor conservancy work. Regular cleaning is on and after the death fogging has been intensified.

“We have asked all the residents to cooperate in the fogging drive by asking them to clear the houses of waste and stagnant water.”
