KASARAGOD: Five persons, including three drivers, were injured and five buses damaged in stone throwing in Kasaragod town and Majeswaram in the district on Thursday on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the demolition of Babri Masjid. Shops and business establishments remained closed, though no organisation had called for a hartal. Private buses remained off the road. Four of the damaged buses belonged to the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) and one belonged to the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation. The injured persons were identified as Riaz Mohammad (52) driver of the Karnataka bus, C. Rajeevan and T.K. Rajeevan, drivers of the KSRTC buses, Damodaran Nambiar, KSRTC conductor, and Subhash Chandran, a passenger. Tension at KanhangadSeveral houses at Muriyanavi and Aavi regions near Kanhangad belonging to activists of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M) and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) were damaged in clashes between workers of both the parties on Wednesday and Thursday. According to the police, the attacks began by 11.30 p.m. on Wednesday when houses of three IUML workers were attacked and damaged. In retaliation, six houses of CPI(M) activists were attacked and damaged early morning on Thursday. Tension continues in the area.
