IGNOU sub-regional centre to be upgraded

Staff Reporter

MADURAI: The sub-regional centre of the Indira Gandhi National Open University here would soon be upgraded as a full fledged regional centre, said its Regional Director, K. Panneerselvam, here on Wednesday.

Briefing presspersons, he said that once it happened the centre would be able to handle operations independently and any grievance from the students could be sorted out locally.

He said that overwhelmed by the demand for its B. Ed. Course, the IGNOU had commenced 23 new B. Ed. Programme Study Centres in Dindigul, Madurai, Pudukkottai, Sivaganga, Theni, Virudhunagar, Tuticorin, Tirunelveli, Ramanathapuram and Kanyakumari districts.

To benefit working diploma engineers with civil/ mechanical/ electrical/ computer/architecture/chemical engineering qualification, IGNOU would offer B. Tech Civil Engineering (Construction Management and Water Resource Management) and B. Tech Mechanical Engineering (Computer Integrated Manufacturing) courses through distance education from January 2008, he said.

The IGNOU had chosen Vickram College of Engineering as programme study centre for these courses. The four-year B. Tech. course through distance education had been designed to impart training and continuing professional education to upgrade diploma-level manpower engaged in supervisory cadre, said Dr. Panneerselvam.

On successful completion of first two years, the student would be awarded with Advanced Diploma in Construction Management (Civil) or Advanced Diploma in Mechanical Engineering. If the student wished he or she could discontinue at this stage, he said.

The main advantages of pursuing these courses were better mobility and course completion period. Students had the freedom to complete the course literally from anywhere in the country and from 35 countries around the world, where IGNOU study centres were located.

Filled-in application forms should reach IGNOU Centre, Theni Main Road, P.P. Chavadi, Madurai on or before December 12. Phone: 0452-2380387.
