dated December 7, 1957: India’s concern

The sincerity with which the Government of India’s concern over the attempt on the Indonesian President, Dr. Sukarno’s life was expressed is equally reflected in the anxiety conveyed over the turn events in Indonesia are now taking following the demonstrations in support of the country’s claim to West Irian. The Indonesian Ambassador in New Delhi met Prime Minister Nehru on December 5 and the precise object of the present demonstrations in Indonesia was discussed. So far as India is concerned, while her sympathy for Indonesia’s demand for West Irian has been made clear, there could be no question of appreciating the use of violence or other methods which could only result in embitterment of external relations. India’s view has been that the problem should be discussed and settled by peaceful means.
