News Analysis
* * The heading of an item (“Snippets – Business” page, December 6, 2007) was “George Soros buys 5.8 p.c. stake in GAEL”, while the text said that Gujarat Ambuja Exports Limited (GAEL) is setting up a maize processing facility in Uttaranchal, with a capacity of 500 tonnes a day, at a cost of Rs. 65 crore. The Business Desk clarifies that the heading should have been “GAEL U.P. maize unit to go on stream shortly”. The last sentence in the report “Recently, George Soros Controlled Quantum Fund, a Foreign Institutional Investor (FII), has acquired 5.8 per cent stake in the company”, was edited out at the time of going to press. * * The heading of a Chennai report (November 28, 2007, page 3) was “Order of knighthood for Chennai resident”, while the text said that Queen Elizabeth II of England has conferred an honorary order of knighthood on C. Venuprasad, a Chennai resident, in recognition of his contribution to the Association of British Scholars in India, a network for Indians who have studied or trained in the U.K. British High Commissioner Richard Stagg invested him as a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) at a brief ceremony held at the British Council on Tuesday. A query was whether an MBE is a knighthood. Mr. R. Fernandez, Head (South India), Press & Public Affairs, British Deputy High Commission, Chennai, clarifies that the report is right. Though an MBE is not quite the same as a knighthood, it is a part of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire which was founded by King George the Fifth in 1917 and is the UK’s most recently created Order of Knighthood. A knighthood, however, is conferred upon those who are made a Knight Grand Cross, a Knight Commander or a Dame Commander and who can then be called “Sir” or “Dame”.
