Haemoglobin level to be improved Iron tablets distributed MADURAI: It is catching them young for their good health. An initiative called ‘Hb 12 X 12’ has taken up in a Corporation girls’ school here as a pilot project to test and improve the haemoglobin level of students at the age of 12 years. The Madurai Obstetrics and Gynaecology Society (MOGS) launched the initiative on Thursday among sixth and seventh class students, by conducting haemoglobin (Hb) tests for girls with a message that 12 gm should be the right level at the age of 12 years. “I am keen to extend it to all Government schools in the district. If we correct the deficiencies at school-going age, girls will benefit a lot,” said S. S. Jawahar, Collector, who formally launched the initiative at the Kakkaipadiniyar Corporation Girls Higher Secondary School. After the haemoglobin level was checked, iron tablets were distributed to students who were asked to take good nutritious food daily. The Collector pointed out that several women were found anaemic during pregnancy and it could be avoided, if the health was taken care of at school level itself. “Rural schools particularly require this 12x12 project,” Mr. Jawahar said and added that girls could score good marks if they were healthy. According to Revathy Janakiram, president of MOGS, the health status of girls who got folic acid tablets would be tested again after six months and a report on the impact of this pilot project submitted to the Collector. She said that this initiative was meant only for one school now since the Federation of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Society of India was doing it as a pilot project. A. Rajeswari, Headmistress, said that nearly 200 adolescent girl students would undergo HB test and get the right medical advice from doctors.
