Power cut affects drinking water schemes in Virudhunagar district

Staff Reporter

VIRUDHUNAGAR: The power cuts across the State have badly affected the Tamiraparani and Manur combined drinking water projects that serves Aruppukottai, Virudhunagar, Sivaksi, Tiruthangal towns and the Kariyapatti and Mallankinaru town panchayats.

During a review meeting of drinking water supply in the district held here on Wednesday, the Minister for Backward Classes Welfare, K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran, said that the quantity of water supply to the towns had been affected in the last two months. It was found that lack of proper power supply, low voltage problem and leakage of water in various places caused the problem, he said.

The officials of Tamil Nadu Electricity Board officials promised to take care of the low voltage problem within 15 days.

The Minister said that in order to prevent interruption of power supply for the Tamiraparani water scheme a separate power line would be laid for the benefit of the water pumping stations at Kailasapuram, Eppothumvendran (both Tuticorin district), Melakaranthai and Palavanatham (both Virudhunagar district) at a cost of Rs. 124 lakhs. Similarly, another separate power line would be laid for the Manur drinking water project to run the pumping stations at Vembakottai, Keelanmarainadu, Sitthurajapuram at a cost of Rs. 33 lakhs. The works under way would be completed by February 15.

A total of Rs. 8 crore has been allotted to relay the pipelines that were damaged during the implementation of the four-laning work, he added.

The Managing Director of Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board, Swaran Singh, said the Government was committed to provide protected drinking water at the time convenient to the people.

The Collector, V. Chandrasekaran, said good maintenance of the two water projects would solve drinking water problems.
