Kozhikode: The Pravasi India Forum and the Pravasi India Confederation have demanded that the Centre set up the Central Non Resident Indian (NRI) University in the State. A meeting of office-bearers of the organisations here on Thursday said that three-fourths of the NRIs were from the State and were contributing to the economic development of the country. However, the Centre had been neglecting the genuine needs of people of the State. During the inauguration of the fifth Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas in New Delhi in January, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had proposed to establish a university for Persons of Indian Origin. The proposed university would meet the needs of the overseas Indian community in the most sought-after disciplines including engineering and management. The university would impart quality education at par with the best universities in the world. The Centre is still working out modalities on setting up the university. Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan had already held a few rounds of discussions with the Centre in this regard. The organisations demanded that the university be set up in Malabar.
