Court orders release of alleged serial killer

Staff Reporter

Accused of killing at least 4 persons

Dumped bodies outside Tihar Jail

NEW DELHI: Chandra Kant Jha, accused of killing at least four persons and dumping their bodies outside Tihar Central Jail, has been released in one of the murder cases registered against him. The court ordered the release in the case as the police did not have enough evidence to file a charge sheet against the accused.

However, Jha will continue to remain in judicial custody as charge sheets in three other murder cases have already been filed by the Delhi police.

The Investigating Officer of the murder case told Metropolitan Magistrate Manish Gupta that the police had no evidence against Jha pertaining to his alleged killing of one Umesh at Hari Nagar in West Delhi in 2003. With nothing more than the alleged disclosure statement of the accused, the officer told the court that the police were not in a position to file the charge sheet. Subsequently the Metropolitan Magistrate ordered Jha’s release in the case.

Earlier, the police had filed three charge sheets against Jha for allegedly killing Dilip, Amit Kumar and Upendra between 2003 and 2006. Jha was accused of killing Dilip before his arrest on May 21.

Following his arrest, Jha, a resident of Madhepura in Bihar, had allegedly told the police that he killed these men as he did not like their habits of drinking, eating meat and womanising. He had been arrested in a murder case in 1998 also but was acquitted four years later.
